Trail of Two Forests
(total time for drive and hike is approximately 1 - 2 hours)
This boardwalk trail (1/2 mile) loops through two forests that stand side by side, but are separated in age by 2000 years. One forest is old-growth Douglas-fir and Western red-cedar and the other is a young forest that was originally engulfed by lava flow from an eruption of Mount St. Helens over two millennia ago. This forest encompasses three-dimensional imprints of trees in the old lava beds called lava casts.
For the hike, please bring:
-
Sturdy, waterproof walking shoes
-
Source of light if you choose to climb down a ladder descending eight feet into a lava-cast tree mold.
-
Light rain jacket
-
Water
We will meet in front of lodge right after session ends on Saturday, approx. 1 PM to arrange carpooling. We will leave for hike at 1:15 PM. Contact Sue Hines 971.409.3071 with any questions.
